Carol Blackwell is an abstract painter and printmaker who is best known for mysteriously curious three dimensional boxes and sculptures devised from found materials.

Her obsession with objects both found and re-fashioned, inspire many different genres of her work, including experimental handmade books. It serves also as the title of many courses she has taught and still teaches at the New Art Center and at the Danforth Art Museum School, 'FOUND OBJECT SCULPTURE' and 'CONTEMPORARY COLLAGE'.

Over the past ten years her art has been exhibited in solo and juried group exhibits at the New Art Center Holzwasser Gallery, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in Barcelona, Spain, Radcliffe Institute, Harvard University, Heywood Gallery, Danforth Museum Student Gallery, Newton Free Library, The Asian Gallery, Beyond the Book Exhibits at several BLP libraries, and Brickbottom Gallery.

One of Blackwell's paintings from the series LINE/MIND is in the collection of the Boston Atheneaum and exhibited recently in their show "Collecting for the Boston Athenaeum in the 21st Century: Painting & Sculpture."

Her work is in private collections in Maine, Boston, Florida, Connecticut, Washington, D.C. and California.

"My work (printmaking, painting, collage, wall constructions and bookmaking) doesn’t seem to make any kind of conceptual sense, least of all to me. I wake-up each morning, look at the accumulated messes surrounding me, eyeball a rusty oil-can on the floor and bingo, something goes off inside my head.

With each piece of work, I feel I’m beginning anew, even when the process remains the same. The object, image or material stimulates a rush of energy so I can begin. As I work I have no idea what I am creating and as Duchamp suggests, 'what a work signifies is the viewer’s responsibility, not the artist’s.' I do what the object tells me, be it a construction, collage, painting or book."
